GCHQ Webinar: Using German to Decode Messages and Protect National Security

On Tuesday 21st October 2025, a group of students across Portsmouth participated in an exciting virtual German language outreach event run by GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), one of the UK’s leading intelligence and security agencies. The session was designed for students with an interest in German and how language skills can be applied in careers in national security, intelligence, and international communication.

During the webinar, students:

  • Learned about the work of language analysts at GCHQ,
  • Took part in an interactive German language activity, using their linguistic and problem-solving skills to decode messages and prevent a simulated terrorist attack,
  • Heard from professionals who use language expertise in real-world contexts, and
  • Had the opportunity to ask questions and explore how studying German can open doors to a wide range of career pathways.

The session gave students a hands-on experience of how German can be used in critical and highly specialised roles, demonstrating that language learning is not just academic—it has practical applications in areas such as intelligence, security, and international relations.

Students really enjoyed the experience and shared some of their thoughts afterwards:

Thusayas  – “I loved it!”

Mya – “I really want to visit the GCHQ!”

Shaiqa – “very interactive and very informative”

Ana – “I had a very good time, and I learnt a lot of new things”

Jake – “It was intriguing and opened our eyes to opportunities”

Sofia – “I find it interesting to look at careers that are more aspirational”

Penny – “fascinating and fun”

The webinar highlighted the importance of linguistic skills in solving complex problems and working collaboratively and provided an inspiring example of how learning a language like German can lead to exciting and meaningful career opportunities.
