Mingalaba Inspires Students Across Three Schools Through Language, Sport and Opportunity
At the end of March, students across three local schools took part in an exciting and inspiring languages event led by Mingalaba. Delivered in French, Spanish and German, the programme uniquely combined language learning with football to boost motivation, teamwork and cultural understanding.
The three day initiative took place on Wednesday 25th March at Trafalgar School, Thursday 26th March at Admiral Lord Nelson School and Friday 27th March at Mayfield School.
Each visit offered a high energy and enriching experience, clearly demonstrating how languages can open doors far beyond the classroom, particularly within sport and global career pathways.
Setting the Tone: Motivation and Purpose
Each day began with a motivational talk from the Mingalaba team, setting a powerful and purposeful tone for the learning ahead. Students explored how learning languages across French, Spanish and German can unlock exciting opportunities in football, sport, media and international careers.
The message throughout was clear and empowering. Languages are not just subjects, they are skills for life. Students were encouraged to see themselves as confident communicators, with opportunities and aspirations that reach far beyond their current school experience.
Connecting Language Learning to the Real World
Following the introductory talk, students took part in two engaging classroom based workshops designed to bring language learning to life and place it firmly within real world contexts.
The Match Report
In this session, students developed their writing and speaking skills by analysing and reporting on football matches in the target language. Through structured and supportive activities, they practised key vocabulary, sentence structures and descriptive language, gaining confidence while working on a topic that felt familiar, relevant and motivating.
MFL Careers in Football and Sport Workshop
This interactive workshop broadened students’ understanding of the wide range of careers where language skills are essential. From coaching and commentary to journalism, media, management and international relations, students discovered how languages are used daily across the sporting world. Real life examples and clear career pathways helped make the link between language learning and future employability both realistic and inspiring.
Bringing Language to Life on the Pitch
In the afternoon, learning moved from the classroom to the pitch as students took part in a Practical Football Session. Wearing their PE kits, students joined in warm ups, team challenges and small sided matches, using their target language in real time throughout the activities.
This practical and inclusive session encouraged spoken communication in French, German and Spanish, teamwork and leadership, cultural awareness through shared experiences and high levels of participation, enjoyment and confidence.
The atmosphere was energetic and positive, with students enthusiastically applying their language skills in a new and memorable context.
A Lasting Impact Across All Three Schools
Across Trafalgar, Admiral Lord Nelson and Mayfield Schools, the Mingalaba visits were met with outstanding engagement from both students and staff. Learners demonstrated increased motivation towards languages, growing confidence in speaking and a clearer understanding of how language skills connect to future careers.
Most importantly, the events helped students view languages as exciting, relevant and empowering, reinforcing the idea that strong communication skills are a vital part of success in sport and beyond.
Looking Ahead
We are proud to have welcomed Mingalaba across our schools and look forward to building on this momentum within future language learning. Experiences like these remind students that learning a language goes far beyond exams. It is about connection, opportunity and confidence on a global stage.
A huge thank you to the Mingalaba team for delivering three inspiring days that students will remember long after the final whistle.
